Insight in Mental Illness

The human mind and brain are truly magnificent. But just like in the body, sometimes things can go wrong or diseases occur.

Especially at the workplace, extra care or actions may then be necessary to help someone perform at their best, or to prevent relapses or incidents.

Did you know…

That currently in every 100 people one is suffering from schizophrenia, one from bipolar disorder, and another from autism.

Which means that every time you pass by 33 people, you will have met at least one person suffering from these diseases – and these aren’t even the ones that are most common.

Special skills to help special people better

At the request of some of our client organizations, we created these workshops and training courses especially for those working with people suffering from mental illness, without any education in medicine or psychiatry. These programs are designed to provide the knowledge you really need in an understandable, practical and playful way.

These are some of the professions that have already made use of our training programs:

  • Teachers (as many of these illnesses manifest themselves for the first time during puberty)
  • Youth workers
  • Police officers (as the number of incidents caused by psychosis increases rapidly)
  • Teams working with asylum seekers (as there is a higher than average number suffering from schizophrenia among them, which is often mistaken for PTSD)
  • Supervisors in sheltered workplaces
  • Municipal officials and job coaches (as the percentages of these diseases are far higher among those who have trouble finding jobs)
  • Company doctors
  • Community workers
  • And many more

A surprising tour through the hidden parts of the mind

In our courses, you will learn a lot about the various mental illnesses that you never knew before, like: what are they and what do they really do to people suffering from them? Why does this make them behave the way they do? What are the potential risks, either for the diseased or for their surroundings? How to talk about a disease or handicap with those suffering from it? And what kind of circumstances (at school or work) help people to remain stable, or instead increase the risk of a relapse?

What you really need to know

You can also expect a lot of practical (and often surprising) insights, like for example:

  • That some of these diseases follow a fluctuating pattern, which means that they can hide without a trace within someone for years to resurface again unexpectedly.
  • The three specific steps to take when talking with someone suffering from psychosis, helping you to avoid any risk;
  • The specific conditions that enable someone with autism to function above average;
  • The two factors that determine over 80% of the success in employing someone with mental illness;
  • The signs are that professional help is required;
  • The three specific risks of schizophrenia, that you should always be aware of;
  • That ADHD is not always the same disease, and sometimes not a disease at all;
  • That mental problems among refugees often have other causes than PTSD;
    In every training there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions or to discuss situations relevant to your team or company. On request, our programs can also be tailor-made for your organization to suit your needs and desires best.
